PayPal UK fees: questions sellers ask

How much does PayPal charge to receive money for goods?

2.9% + £0.30 for a UK buyer, 4.19% + £0.30 for a buyer in the EEA and 4.89% + £0.30 for buyers elsewhere. A QR code sale in person costs 1.5% + £0.10, or 2% + £0.05 up to £10.

What is the PayPal goods and services fee in the UK?

2.9% + £0.30 when a UK buyer pays you for something you sell, whether at checkout, by invoice or with Send money as goods and services. It is 4.19% + £0.30 from the EEA and 4.89% + £0.30 from elsewhere.

How are PayPal fees worked out?

A percentage of the whole payment, including postage and any VAT in the price, plus a fixed fee. For a £50 UK sale that is 2.9% of £50 (£1.45) + £0.30 = £1.75.

What does PayPal charge for international payments?

An extra 1.29% when the buyer is in the EEA and 1.99% elsewhere, on top of 2.9% + £0.30. It depends on the buyer’s PayPal country, not the delivery address.

What is the PayPal currency conversion fee?

3% above the base exchange rate when you convert a payment received in another currency. NetPayout assumes the buyer pays in pounds and you keep pounds, so it is not included.

Does PayPal add VAT to its fees?

No. PayPal’s fee page shows no VAT on seller fees, so NetPayout adds none. Etsy and eBay do add 20% VAT to their UK fees.

Is shipping included in the fee?

Yes. PayPal charges its percentage on the whole payment, including shipping and any tax you add.

Do I get the fee back if I refund?

No. PayPal keeps the fee it charged when you give a full or partial refund.

Can I use Friends and Family to avoid the fee?

No. Payments for goods must be sent as goods and services. Friends and Family is only for sending money to people you know, and buyers paying that way get no Purchase Protection.
